One comment since my 4P does not have the jumper on the video board connector my board did not work when only doing what is in the video. I did find a Tandy Technical Bulletin that said to remove jump from E4-E5. When I did that jumper removal the board does work nicely

I didn't know LNW actually made a black box version. I guess yours was a kit version? Mine was fully assembled, a good looking cream color, big logo in front, with the front slanted from a curved top edge, very stylish. Have to admit half my reason for getting it instead of the Radio Shack version was how it looked, since I was always hated the silver Trash-80 (lol) look. In fact because of that I didn't get the matching monitor, instead bought a what I think was a Hitachi 9" monitor and adapted the cable, later upgrading to a 12" amber screen, can't remember the manufacturer...

Hey there. I have the very exact same model of this, I won it in an Ebay auction and it just arrived today. However, I cannot get the case off for the life of me. It looks like it's locked up via the key lock. Do you happen to know what kind of key these models take?

Wish someone had ported Dungeons of Daggorath to the Model III / 4 (obviously with hi-res graphics expansion required). Those computers' monochrome monitors would have done a better job with that monochrome game than the CoCo which ended up doing unintended artifact red and blue on the TV sets.

I see you're using an external speaker, maybe a Realistic, which is neat since that's of course a Tandy brand. If you want to really have a nice visual match with the system, with a black and gray theme and Radio Shack branding, try the CB radio extension speaker, Cat. No. 21-549A or 21-549B (some have Realistic badging so keep an eye out). For symmetry (even though the Model I line doesn't do stereo) consider the 40-167 (even though only one of the two has the Radio Shack badge), the 40-1313, the 40-1323, the 40-1362, etc.

The voice synthesizer was not just for Eliza, and Eliza worked fine just doing text. And Radio Shack also sold a voice recognition system so that you could literally talk back and forth with your computer. In the late 1970s!

(ie, how much free space is in a hard drive image file )

Big Buzzard Bait fan. I got pretty good at it. Its competitor Lancer apparently has somewhat slower action but has a floatier feel like you're flying, and the buzzards look like buzzards instead of just blue ostriches, but the clouds are simpler and there's no hand coming out of the lava.

Intriguing. The lack of modulator port on back of casing and the large-sized, angled floppy drive button all point to it being an Atari STF. I've seen one before (an STFM) where the lower casing had been replaced and once the owner realised there was a port hidden behind the case they simply drilled an appropriately sized circular hole in the rear casing to allow connection to the modulator. Ironically it had sticker on bottom saying 1040STF !😋 Keyboard area looks like new from factory and is very clean and lacking "sunburn". Good luck with sale - you always have fascinating stuff on your ebay store!

With the "Bright Light Data Color S" sticker in place of the Atari logo, this might've been originally sold as part of a turnkey system, similar to the Video Toaster-badged Amigas.

  • @wintercoder6687

If you look in the lower right corner you will see that in order to speak, 'Eliza' spoke by sequencing characters to a specific video memory location. The voice synthesizer monitored that memory location for each new character and cross referenced that character to documented list of phonetic sounds that comprise the human language. The synthesizer did NOT read the text. It merely enunciated each sound that was associated with each character. Properly sequenced, you could obtain very clear, understandable speech. I spent many hours programming it for fun. I bought every possible peripheral (exp bay, drives, speech synth, etc.) the moment it came to market using my paper route money when I was 12. Best financial investment I ever made.

You're not gonna put Xenix on this bad boy? TRSDOS hard disk support is a bit naff, it doesn't even support floppies. The true power of the machine could only be unlocked with Xenix.
